Theodora "Dorothy" Mathilda Cira Juderjahn, Cychosz and Dombeck Ancestry Charts and Family History

Editor Michael R. Reilly 11/08/07

Dorothy's father, John Cira, immigrated to America, landing at the Port of New York on May 20, 1879, after a voyage from Rotterdam, Netherlands (Holland) aboard the SS Amsterdam. He was accompanied by his father August (?), brothers, Joseph and Michael, and a sister, Clementine. Not much is known about John, his Declaration of Intent dated October 27, 1896 or his Naturalization papers of September 24, 1906 found in Marathon County, Wisconsin provide little personal information. Yet, his brother Joseph's D.O.I. from 1918 indicates that Joseph was born in Kreis Berent, Germany. [Editor's notes - Kreis is the German term closest to our name County.  A recent internet search by the editor found a village/city of Berent, in the Kreis. Berent (now called Koscierzyna), was in the old district of Danzig (or the Polish name - Gdansk), Pommern (Pomerania), or more accurately -  West Prussia (in the German Empire - East), now Poland. Question - Could the name Bevent be a variation of the homeland village/county of Berent? See the article about Bevent. ]

Based on Joseph's D.O.I., we may safely say that his brother John was also born in Kreis Berent, but the exact location is unknown [Editor's note - The name Cyra or Cira is familiar in Lipusz [Lippusch, Kreis Berent] area of Poland]

After the Cira family arrival in America, they traveled to East Dubuque, Illinois to stay with daughter Mary. Mary had married a man, surname "Klook or Kluck" (?) and had emigrated earlier. The Cira family went on to the Town of Reid(? - see below) later in 1879.  [Editor's note: On Dec. 28, 2001 this editor reviewed a complete microfilmed 1880 Marathon county Federal Census, township by township, at the Waukesha Public Library and found no Cira/Cera/Cyra families listed. Could they have stayed in East Dubuque after 1880 or perhaps went to Portage county or ? in Wisconsin first? Additional research by editor on Jan 4, 2002, revealed that the city of East Dubuque was originally called "Dunleith", after a Scottish village, but renamed East Dubuque in 1877. The city is surrounded by the Mississippi River and high bluffs, and located in the township of Dunleith, county of Jo Daviess, Illinois. A search of the 1880 Federal Census, Township of Dunleith, which includes the city of East Dubuque, revealed no Kluck/Klook or Cera/Cira/Cyra families living there. So where did the families go to?]

[Question -  the Townships of Reid and Bevent were not established until 1913, so did the family move to the Township of Pike Lake, established in 1886, or to what was the equivalent township in 1879 (name?), near the village of Bevent?] [In 1880 Town of Sharon, Portage county Census there are three Kluck families, two of them with Mary as the wife. One, age 31, is married to August (?) with eight children with a sister Julia Kluck living with them. The other Mary is age 32 and married to John Kluck with five children. Which one if either is the former Mary Cira isn't known. Apparently the Kluck families moved (?) to the Polonia colony (from East Dubuque, Illinois) and the Cira family moved further north to Marathon county (?) since there are no Cira's listed as living in the town of Sharon in 1880.]

Marathon county townships, c. 1913.

Later the family moved to the township of Pike Lake area, their father, August, and the brothers probably bought some land and began homesteading. Present records indicate that their mother, Anna Cira, nee Etmanski, never came to America, but died in Germany. August was born in Danzig, Germany, and died in Gdansk [Polish name for Danzig]. If so, he must have traveled back to Germany/Poland after his family got settled.

Martin and Rosalia Cychos purchase land at the Wausau land office - The Homestead Act was approved on May 20 granting free family farms to settlers. No. 25 N 9 E3 SWNE 80 acres. Document changed on April 3, 1880 - Remarks added: WIDOW OF MARTIN CYCHOS.

Portage County townships

Martin Cickosh, Sr. and wife Rosalia were found living in the township of Sharon, Portage county, Wisconsin in the 1870 Federal Census, #158. According to the Census, both were 60 years old, born in 1810. They were living alone. Since Martin, Jr. didn't emigrate to America until 1872, his parents, and probably other siblings and ? arrived at a much earlier date. Because of his parents advanced age, Martin, Jr. would have been 19 in 1870, either his parents married at a late age or perhaps had many children. Theodor Cychasz could be a brother of Martin Sr. [Theodor Cychasz married on 03 Jun 1843 in Marathon Co., Vol.  02 Page 0384], and Martin, Jr. named his first born son Theodore after his uncle. [Martin, age 21, farmer, arrived on the SS Holland, alone, from Liverpool and Queenstown to New York on June 21, 1872. Source: Germans to America Vol. 27 May 1872 - July 1872, page 304.]

According to the 1880 Federal Census, Martin Cychosz, Jr. and wife, Mary, nee Dombeck, were reported as living in Sharon township, Portage county, Wisconsin. . Next door to them lived Martin's brother, Anton (Anthony), his wife, Pauline, nee Dombeck (Mary's sister), and his mother Rosalia. Martin, Sr. died sometime between the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census. [Editor's note: After this, further references to Martin Jr. will simply be Martin. No documentation has been found identifying father and son as Sr. and Jr.; this labeling was done for clarity.]

Martin's name appears in the Ashland City Directory in 1888, operating a saloon and boarding house in Ironwood, WI. See below:

[Ashland, Wisconsin Directories, 1888-93: John Drazkowski; Martin Cychasz - Drazkowski & Cychasz, saloon and boarding, Ironwood, WI., 1888]

[Editor's note - Did Anton move to Ashland, Wisconsin? Was his middle initial P.? Is he also the brother of Andrew who married Lucy Okonek and also moved to Ashland?] See entries below:

Ashland City Directory 1888-93

Andrew Cychosz laborer 818 St Clair Ashland WI 1891, 1892

Anton P Cychosz laborer 1121 St Clair Ashland WI 1891, 1892 Brother of Andrew ? Same Anton, brother of Martin in 1880?

Andrew Cychosz laborer 1006 St Clair Ashland WI 1893

Anton P Cychosz B Doherty laborer 1210 St Clair Ashland WI 1893

If the Martin Cychasz in Ashland is the same one from Bevent, then soon after 1888, he must have moved his family to the Bevent area before 1891, because the Bevent Post Office was established April 27, 1891 with Martin Cychosz as its' first postmaster. It was discontinued December 15, 1910 when mail service came from Hatley. Martin must not have been your ordinary Polish farmer, instead he probably was a established and highly regarded merchant [saloonkeeper and boarding house proprietor?] and town citizen. The village of  Bevent was created ? and was in the Township of Pike Lake created in December 30, 1886. [Later on the townships of Bevent and Reid were carved out of the township of Pike Lake with the village of Bevent straddling the two; Reid township is north of Bevent township. See Marathon county map above.].

On January 17, 1899 John Cira married Mathilda Cychosz. Mathilda was born January 21, 1882 in Polonia, Sharon township, Portage county, Wisconsin.

The 1900 Federal Census for the Township of Pike Lake, Marathon county, Wisconsin, shows Martin Cychoz, #50-51, living next door to his son-in-law John Cira, #51-52. What is interesting is that Martin is listed as a "farmer" and John as a "saloonkeeper". It would appear that the two changed occupations, either before or after John and Mathilda were married.

The census was taken on June 9, 1900 and shows the following facts about Martin: he was born November 1851, his age is 48, birthplace is Poland, and his arrived in America in 1872. There is an entry of "PA" under the Naturalization column which could mean, he signed his D.O.I. in Pennsylvania, which indicates the family lived in the Pennsylvania area long enough for his Naturalization process to happen. His wife Mary, nee Dombeck, was born in October 1861, age 38, born in Poland, and emigrated in 1873. The five children listed and living at home, all born in Wisconsin, are August, b. Feb 1880, age 20, day laborer; Leon (Leo), b. Aug 1884, age 15, farm laborer; Helen, b. Dec 1889, age 10, at school; and Emilie, b. July 1899, 10 mos. old.

Theodora "Dorothy" M. Cira was born December 22, 1908 in Bevent, Wisconsin, daughter of John Cira b: August 05, 1872 in Gdansk, Germany d: June 17, 1941 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin [Father August (Cera Cyra) Cira b: in Danzig, Germany d: in Gdansk, Poland Mother Anna Etmanski b: in Germany d: in Germany], and Mathilda Cychosz b: January 21, 1882 in Polonia, Wisconsin d: June 12, 1969 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin married on: January 17, 1899 in Bevent, Marathon, Wisconsin [Father: Martin Cychosz Mother: Mary Dombeck]. Dorothy was the seventh child of twelve from John and Mathilda Cira -

    1. Josephine Cira b: November 27, 1899; 2. Mathilda Cira b: February 28, 1901; 3. Amelia (Emily) Cira b: July 06, 1902; 4. Helen Cira b: December 15, 1903, 5. Theresa "Terry" Cira b: September 23, 1905; 6. John Edward Cira, Jr. b: January 11, 1907; 7. Theodora "Dorothy" M. Cira b: December 22, 1908; 8. August John Cira b: June 01, 1911; 9. Henry "Hank" Michael Cira b: April 06, 1913; 10. Edmund Richard Cira b: March 20, 1915; 11. Evelyn M. Cira b: August 31, 1917; 12. Ervin Cira b: September 30, 1920.

The census shows that John Cira, was born Aug 1870, age 29, birthplace Poland, immigrating in 1879; Naturalization also shows "PA". His wife Mathilda is listed as being born June 1882 in Wisconsin, age 18; daughter Josephine, b. Nov 1899, is 7 mo. old. There are two other non-family (?) members listed - an Anton Polak, b. Mar 1881, a boardee; and Helen Sluminsky (?), b. Jan 1888, age 12, a servant. [No other Cira family members are listed as living in this township in 1900. Where were brothers Joseph and Michael, and sister Clementine?]

Living next to John Cira and Martin Cychosz was Martin's oldest son Theodore [1900 Federal Census] with his wife Mary, two daughters, Therlsa [Theresa] and Martha, and a niece named Helen Fryba.

The Cira farm homestead, where Ma was born (?) in 1908, was about a mile from Bevent. She describes the farmhouse as being two-story, with bedrooms upstairs [in a attic setting, or an attic was there too?]. There may have been a piano in the parlor (?) which Grandpa Cychosz played when he visited. Outside a small pond was situated near the house. A place she remembers brother Hank jumping high out of when he was mad about something. The farm was a little place, in acreage, and they grew potatoes. Ma hated the job of pulling "potato bugs" from the plants - they stunk so much. She recalls her father not being much of a farmer, spending too much time in a Bevent tavern, and of him once throwing her down the basement stairway when she was very young [The basement was probably more like a root cellar for the winter storage of potatoes, and (?).The Polish people were known for planting and farming mostly tubular plants.].

Ma told me that she walked about a mile to a one room school house, a community or public school; but as you will read below, Bevent had a Catholic run school operating from 1914 until beyond 1918 when the Cira family left for Milwaukee. So, except for brother Ervin, being born in Milwaukee, and Auggie, Hank, Edmund, and Evelyn who may have been too young to attend St. Ladislaus Catholic School; the others may attended here.

[Bevent had a Catholic church, St. Ladislaus Church, which served as a meeting place for the inhabitants. The original church and the parsonage were built about 1883, and a new building was erected in 1896 at a cost of $15,000. In 1913, the rector was Rev. Ignatius Latorski. Membership was about 200 families at this time. In 1978, the original home of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church was razed. The frame structure had been moved to Bevent's main street around 1896 when the new church was built. It was used as a parochial school until 1914 and later housed Cherek Brothers Grocery.]

On that walk to school, Dorothy said she was frightened many times by the Furmanek's dog. Her sister Terri would always put her behind her so to protect Dorothy from possible attack; something that never happened. Later at a crossroads, they would come upon a cross and say a brief prayer. Further down, they had to cross a bridge where a snake [possible rattlesnake?] threatened them on occasion. [Editor's note - several attempts have been made by family members to locate the original Cira farm site without success. The only river shown on maps that Dorothy and Terri may have crossed over is the Plover River, just west of Bevent.

Here is a description of the Plover River from Bevent to Shantytown Road (8 miles south) -

The river is gorgeous at the beginning of this stretch - only 20 feet wide, winding through many boulder-laden riffles, with cedar, white pine and white birch on the banks. Put in at the Highway 153 [old County Road K] bridge (upstream-right) in Bevent, where the steeple of St. Ladislaus Church is a prominent landmark. The path down to the low bank is on private property, so please be respectful of it.

After the narrow, circuitous beginning, the river widens somewhat but continues to flow through abundant tree cover. After passing under an old, low-clearance bridge, the river narrows in a right curve; as it does, observe the tall white pine on the right with a huge eagle nest in it.

After the setting briefly opens up at the Bevent Drive bridge, dense woods soon resume and the river passes Pinery Road bridge. Soon thereafter, two more low-clearance farm bridges are followed by a very wild area where downed trees must be avoided, especially in an S-curve immediately after the second farm bridge.

Widening again in the approach to County J, the streambed narrows once more and is wooded and winding to the Shantytown Road bridge; take out on the grassy bank, downstream-right. After Shantytown Road the Plover becomes increasingly marshy as it heads toward the old mill dam that forms Bentley Pond.

Two caveats about this trip: (1) at higher water levels, the three farm bridges are too low for safe passage; and (2) the S-curve after the third farm bridge tends to collect deadfall, so a portage may be necessary. Stay off the river if the water is high.

Both Dorothy and August Cira report that the Cira family moved from Bevent to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1918. Work and money were difficult to come by in Bevent, so with the encouragement of John Cira's brother, Michael, the oldest daughters Josephine and May (Mathilda) were sent ahead. They secured work in Milwaukee with a shoe factory [Simplex Shoe Co. ?] , then were followed by sisters, Emily and Helen. Michael Cira had moved to Milwaukee sometime much earlier, and was never found in the Marathon county census from 1880 thru 1910. Perhaps the sisters were put up by their uncle Michael's family? [When and where from did Michael Cira come to Milwaukee? Where did he live in Milwaukee? He had about 17 children? Did brother Joseph follow John and family? What became of sisters Mary and Clementine?]

August "Auggie" Cira says that the first place the family lived at was on Marshall St. on Milwaukee's East Side. He may have first worked at the shoe factory [age 8 or ?] with brother John and sister Dorothy. He also worked for a piano company cleaning pianos, and taking them apart. The company hired blind people to tune the pianos. During (?) the Depression he worked for the Reiss Manufacturing Co. for 15 cents and hour. Often accompanied his mother with his coaster wagon to pick up relief food. [Editor's note - After checking the Milwaukee City Directories, I first find evidence of the family living there in 1919 with a John Cera, a scaler, at 329 Brady St. with daughters Josephine and May, both listed as "mach. hd", though see listing below. There are other Cera/Cira/Cyra's listed earlier directories and the surname spelling is interchanged and alternate spellings referenced in later directory years. There are also Cychosz families living in the area during this time. The 1920 edition lists the family now at 794 Marshall St. with John G. Cera as a "tallyman" at the John Schroeder Lumber Co. located near the Walnut St. bridge. His wife Mathilda is listed along with daughters Emily H. and Theresa S. both as a "heel builders", and Helen, a "laborer".]

1918 Milwaukee City Directory listings with added notes -

  • John Cera, sheet iron worker, 742 Bremen St. [son of Michael and Cora Cira] [In 1920 Joseph A. Cera, probably John's younger brother, is living with this John, a boilermaker] [In 1921 wife is listed as "Laura"  - Valeria Charneska? In 1922 it's "Clara"? Joseph A. is still living with him as a "mattress maker". Also with Vera and Virginia - his daughters?]

  • Michael Cera [in 1921] , wife Mary, meat cutter, 483 Mitchell St. [son of Michael and Cora Cira]

The Cychosz listed are -

  • Antoninette, widow of John, 1506 Humboldt Ave.
  • Charles or Carl, laborer, 305 Hamilton [has moved to 887 Astor in 1920
  • Nicholas, tanner, 926 Racine Ave.
  • Edward, laborer, 958 Pulaski St. [In 1920 same address but "helper"]
  • Joseph A., saloon, 958 Pulaski St. [Same address in 1920 but occupation is now "soft drinks"]

Auggie said that everything earned went to their parents to help with supporting the family, except for a weekly allowance of 25 cents. To see a movie cost 10 cents. For Auggie, this continued [though the allowance increased] until a year before he was to be married.  Then he was allowed to keep everything he earned, minus room & board, to save for his marriage on November 15, 1941 to Aileen Catherine Barrett.

The nuns at St. Hedwig's Catholic School on Brady St. and ? were fond of Auggie, partly because he could speak good Polish.

His father initially worked at the Schroeder Lumber Yards. Later, Auggie's father operated several taverns, Eddy Stroika [Edward Stroika is listed in the 1915 CD as a shoe worker living with Frank, Joseph, Leo, and Max at 903 Astor] being a partner in one, and other family in ?.When they lived on Marshall St., his mother operated a still in the attic, and the moonshine was sold in his father's tavern. [Locations of taverns? Humboldt and ?, and ?  For John Cira to have owned or worked in a tavern, it would have been before 1920 or after April 1933 when Prohibition ended. Unless he helped run an illegal "speakeasy" type business, perhaps in the guise of a soft drinks business?]

Auggie remembers his sisters, Terri and Dorothy, dressing up as "flappers" and dancing onstage at a theater. His sister, Dorothy, met her future husband, Peter Juderjahn, at a dance spot called the "Roof Top", or simply named the "Roof" [Dorothy interview]. Peter had a sister, Clara, who danced as a "flapper" and sang at a Chicago night-spot, possibly an Al Capone site. For the young men, and maybe the sisters, before dancing, one had to get in the proper frame of mind [get some courage?], so off to the "Triangle" tavern on North Ave. to buy a few drinks with cheap whiskey. [Editor's note - no business called the Roof Top, Roof, or Triangle were found in Milwaukee City Directories through 1930. If Dorothy met Peter at the Roof Top, I wonder what it was?]

During summer school breaks [and maybe at Fall harvest times], Auggie and his family would travel by train to Bevent or Rhinelander. To Bevent his mother and sisters returned with old clothes they had bought in Milwaukee and fixed up [most were dressmakers and seamstresses]. The Bevent relation had need of such things, and help with the farm crops. The boys would go rabbit hunting on the Filtz family farm [Aunt Johanna Cychosz had married Peter Filtz. Name was probably Filtzkowsky at one time. Did her sister Emilia also remain in the Bevent are with husband Theodore Landowski?]

On trips to Auntie Helen Cychosz's farm near Lake Nokomis the train would only go as far as Rhinelander, then they were picked up by her husband August Walkowski, or a son, in their buckboard wagon. The farm was 20 miles from Rhinelander, and a round-trip by wagon took most of a day's travel time. One such trip ended up with Auggie being jailed for pouching deer out of season. Because food was always needed, the men went hunting when necessary, but one time most of the group was caught by the game warden. Auggie spent the next month in the county jail, but got out to work at the Sheriff's lake resort. They were allowed to fish, and hunt (guns supplied by the Sheriff), with the catch going back to feed the other jail residents.

After World War II broke out, he couldn't join the Army, due to his inability to smell, so he worked at Harley-Davidson making motorcycles, many for the military effort, until 1949, when he moved his wife and daughter to the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.
