Bowes aka Bows Family

    William Bowes aka Bows (1860 and 1880) or Rowes (1870), b. abt 1827, England; married Jane Thompson, b. abt 1830 in New York; bef. 1850 William and Jane married, and lived with her father, Charles Thompson in the town of Vernon, Oneida county, New York. Her father was a mason, b. abt 1787 in New York.

    Between 1854-1858, the William Bowes family, consisting of William, Jane, daughter, Hannah, age 9, b. New York, and daughter Eveline, age 7, left New York state along with Jane's father and other Thompson family members and settled in the town of Flushing, Genesee county, Michigan. Their daughter, Viola, was born abt. 1859 and son, Elmer, in 1862. The 1860 Census lists the family as "Bows".

    After 1862, the William Bowes family moved to the town of Lisbon, Waukesha county, Wisconsin and are listed as the "Rowes". Elmer is eight years old; Eveline isn't with them, either she has married young, and lives in Michigan or Wisconsin, or she died between 1860 and 1870. The Thompson families remained behind in Michigan.

    Hannah Bowes married William Albert Stone on October 13, 1874, and gave birth to their only child, Effie Leone Stone, on January 5, 1878.

    William was the son of James Stone, b. abt 1815 in Sussex, England. He married (Elizabeth) Frances Sisley on April 18, 1839. Frances was born October 1, 1822 and died October 27, 1853. William later married Lucy Fielder.

    James Stone was the son of James Stone, Sr., b. abt 1874 in Sussex, England, and died September 25, 1854 in Sussex, Waukesha, Wisconsin. James married Mariah Smith, b. abt July 16, 1790, and died March 24, 1861, also in Sussex, Wisconsin.

    Elmer Bowes and Carrie Stone were married at the Episcopal parsonage last week. Waukesha Freeman, March 3, 1892.

Miss Effie Stone Takes the Third Watch to that Town
    There are now three Freeman watches in the town of Sussex. It was a slip of the pen which made The Freeman say last week that Miss Lulu Buck had secured the first watch in that town, as only a week or tow before we had noted the success of Miss Cora Templeton in the watch contest. The third watch winner is Miss Effie Stone of Sussex. She is a very bright and nice appearing girl, thirteen years of age. She brought in seven subscribers instead of six and secured a pretty cord by which to attach her watch. Miss Effie did not carry her watch away in a case, but she immediately slipped the cord around her neck and the watch in her belt. She too the nice satin-lined case however to keep it in. There are several other girls and boys in Sussex who are canvassing there for Freeman watches and we expect to have other watch winners to chronicle before long. Waukesha Freeman, April 2, 1891.

    1900 Census - Jane M. Bowes, age 70, is Head of Household in Lisbon, Waukesha, Wisconsin, with her son Elmer, and two granddaughters, Elva and Mercy.

    W. A. Lewis of Milwaukee, spent Sunday with his grandmother, Mrs. Bowes. He was accompanied by his family. June 6, 1901

    Mrs. E. A. Raiser of Cambria, Wis., is the guest of her mother, Mrs. J. Bowes. November 21, 1901

    O. S. Lewis and William Lewis were the guests of Mrs. J. Bowes. April 24, 1902

    Mrs. Wm. Stone and Elmer Bowes attended the marriage of their nephew, Oscar L. Lewis, of Cambria, on Wednesday, the 12th. Waukesha Freeman, October 20, 1904.

    Elmer E. Bowes and Viola Price were Waukesha visitors Thursday last. Jan. 21, 1909.

    1910 Census - Jane Bowes still lives with son Elmer in Sussex, but is no longer Head. His sister Viola Price also lives with them, so her husband had passed away.

    Mrs. Viola Price and Elva Bowes were Milwaukee visitors Friday. February 17, 1910.

    Elmer Bowes is spending a few days with relatives near St. Paul, Minn. Jan. 8, 1914

    George Medhurst has the position of foreman of the gang at the Bark River gravel pit, and Elmer Bowes is section boss in Mr. Medhurst's place. July 16, 1914. Viola Price and husband live in Milwaukee ?

    Elmer Bowes is moving into the house vacated by Frank Sliaske. April 6, 1916 Noah Schultz moved his family into Elmer's vacant house.

    Elmer Bowes and family, and his sister, Mrs. Price of Sussex, have moved to Merton  into the Miss Robert' house and Mr. Steuve and family have moved into the house vacated by the Bowes. January 11, 1917

     Mrs. Edw. Lidicker, of Milwaukee, is visiting at the home of her father, Elmer Bowes. December 25, 1919.

    1920 Census on Ancestry.com translates Elva Harland into "Bina Harland"

    Mrs. Stone, who had been visiting her sister at Cambria, motored here last week with her nephew, Oscar Lewis. September 9, 1920

    Elmer Bowes and sister, Viola Price, have moved to Whitewater. Mr. Bowes' son-in-law, Ed Lidicker, has rented a meat market and started in business there. The house vacated by Bowes has Mr. and Mrs. George Grenweiss moving into it. October 28, 1920.

    Between April 27 to May 3, 1921; Elmer E. Bowes sold to Edgar Lees and wife Ida May, Part Section 26, Town of Lisbon. May 12, 1921.

1930 Census - Whitewater, Walworth, Wisconsin; Elmer and his sister Viola in residence.

    July 16, 1932 - Viola Bowes Price dies.

Effie Arter of Milwaukee, was a niece of the Mrs. Viola Price, nee Bowes, who died Saturday at her home in Whitewater. Buried at Rose Hill cemetery. Former resident of Lisbon. Mr. Price died several years ago. Leaves a brother, Elmer Bowes, who lived with her. Two nieces, Mrs. John Harland of Pewaukee, and Mrs. Ed Lidicker of Whitewater, who also made their home for sometime after the death of their mother. Waukesha Freeman, Thursday, July 21, 1932.
