I did a search on Ann; I assume that parents were with her. The search doesn't enable one to view the ship's manifest unless there is something more I missed.
The 1880 Fed Census for Town of Lisbon, Waukesha, Wisconsin has Ann Gilmore living with a Peter Melville, age 79, farmer, as a Servant. Peter may be father (?) of Alexander. So in 1880 she hasn't married yet at age 45? Something I just noticed re the 1880 Census; if she wasn't married, then James Samuel Pierce born March 24, 1872 couldn't be her natural son. ============================== Date: Tue, 7 Oct 2003 08:28:58 -0500 Mike,
I will try to explain my Anne GILMORE dilemma, but I am afraid it will cause a relapse of your illness. GGgrandmother Anne has caused me a lot of research difficulties.
You will note on the 1870 census she is single and living in Lisbon. It is my understanding that she married a PIERCE man (first name unknown), ended up in Elyria, OH, and gave birth to her son there in 1872. She returned to the Lisbon area in 1876. The mysterious PIERCE man she married supposedly owned a "harness shop" in Chicago. He also was a lumber man and travelled to work in the woods. This PIERCE man died in the Chicago fire, or possibly the Peshtigo fire, while Anne was away visiting relatives. Anne never heard from him again. So goes the family story that has been passed down. I have yet to determine what portion is true and what portion is false.
If you look at later censuses she is listed as "widowed", not single, and goes by the name of Anne PIERCE .
James Samuel PIERCE is the legitimate son of Anne GILMORE. I have information that proves it as well as that Anne was in fact married. However, I have yet to find a birth record for James or a marriage certificate for Anne and Mr. Mystery PIERCE.
