Generation No. 1
1. MARIA ELIZABETH (ELISABETHA LAUXIN)1 LAUX1,2 was born Bef. 1731 in Eschbach, Pfalz, Bavaria3,4.Notes for M ARIA ELIZABETH (ELISABETHA LAUXIN) LAUX:>The reason I asked about Eliz Lauxin was 1) to learn >anything more about her family (since she would be an >ancestor to both of us) Agreed, Eliz. Looking into her past would add to our knowledge. >and 2),if the Immels from Silz, Pfalz/Landau,Russia were possibly related or if one of them could have been the father? If they weren't, do you have any possible leads to Immels/Emmels or ? in Germany that could have been the family from which the father of Nicholas? > A German researcher of the Immel name told me it was came from a Gothic tribal name. It is not so unusual that it is worth looking in these other places. Example. There has been a large Immel group in Fond du Lac for well over 100 years. Ran a large construction company. I've been in touch with them. We are not related, based on records back into the 1600s. They come from an area far from Waldhambach, a place called Oberdieten. When Nic. Immel was born, there were many male Immels right there in the Waldhambach area so it doesn't make sense to look far and wide for his father. And how could you tell which one was the father?

Generation No. 4
4. JOHN4 IMMEL (PETER3, JOHANN (NICOLAS) NICOLAUS2, MARIA ELIZABETH (ELISABETHA LAUXIN)1 LAUX)63 was born June 24, 1826 in Waldhambach, Pfalz, Bavaria63, and died May 12, 1880 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He met (1) ELIZABETH WEBER WERNER63,64,65 November 26, 1855 in Holy Angel's, West Bend, Washington, WIsconsin66, daughter of JOHN WEBER and ELIZABETH UNK. She was born Bet. 1830 - 1836 in Heibach, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany66,67,68, and died 69,70. He married (2) ANNA "ANNIE" (MARY) HEINRICH HINRICHS March 20, 1873 in F6-76, Fond du Lac Hall, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She died December 13, 1918 in TE/deaths vol 420, p323, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Notes for J OHN IMMEL:Do you have any idea of why Appolonia and her sister Emma were abandoned by her mother Eliz Weber Werner Immel since she died in 1898 (not her death date)? With her father John dying in 1880, Appolonia would have been 23 years old at his death. Something terrible must have happened long before. I haven't had a chance yet to check the 1860 and 1870 Census records to see where they were. I also know that Engmann and Eliz. moved around (to Waukesha, 1870's?) for awhile. <Is there anything else (some area of information in West Bend) that would be useful? I was thinking of checking Probate records up there. I believe Probate only deals with estate matters, following a death of the estate owner. That doesn't seem to be the case here. >I never checked for Divorce records anywhere; is that something acessible? If so, where do you look? Milw. county has a separate name index for divorces. May be Wash. Co. has too. BUT are you certain Eliz. Weber Immel didn't simply die before 1826 John remarried? I like your idea to check the 1860 & 1870 census.> Tom, I checked the Probate files and any Civil/Criminal cases (Clerk of Courts in West Bend) but found nothing regarding Eliz Weber Werner Immel or John Immel/Emmel (and other variations) or their children. After looking at their marriage cert., it appears that Eiz was married before to a ? Werner since it says she was born Weber. There are about a half dozen more file cards for an Elizabeth Werner; I checked a couple, but found nothing matching. No death records for her, no birth records for Appolonia, Emma or any other Immel/Emmel children related to John Immel. I did ask to check any adoption records BUT even after nearly 150 years, they won't allow you access without a court order. I couldn't even check if any records existed that I could then pursue for examination. Next I'll be looking at Census records for later years. Which John Immel, from Alto Wisconsin, enlisted in the 27th Reg on Feb. 1, 1865 and mustered out on Aug 29, 1865 ? Now we have a Mary to identify. (The only Mary Immel I have in my database was born to Peter on November 12, 1860. Could she be a wife of William's. I know he married Alma in 1903, but hewould have been old enough in 1895 to have a wife. Nope. Could she be one of Anna Hinrich's unknown children?). Yep. The John Immel of Milwaukee >couldn't have been her (Eliz Immel Engmann) brother (my gggrandfather) >since he died in 1880.unless it was John Martin (Emmel) Immel, John's son (natural or adopted) from >his 2nd marriage to Anna Hinrichs. It was the younger of 1826 John's two sons by 2nd wife: John Martin (Emmel), b. about 1876 ...John (1826) was between 1873 (Any idea what brewery he was peddling beer for? For instance, was he selling West Bend beer in Milwaukee? No idea. From Tom Elhert with Mike Reilly comments in bold in ( ) Results of 3 hours of looking at census rec., indecies to MKE Co. b., m., and d; and MKE directories. Eleanore EMMEL was born 2/14/1879 in MKE to John (1826). Next week, I'll look at the birth record itself. (BTW, her name was also spelled Eleonore.) Correction. In a letter I sent to Joel and may have copied to you by email, I said that when John (1826) died in MKE in 1880 BOTH parents (of Eleanore, John Martin, and John Martin Jacob EMMEL) were dead. WRONG. The mother, Anna, survived and lived well into the 1900s. Strangely, however, there was a court action of some kind in 1880-1884 - my notes say a guardian was appointed for John (1826)'s children. That doesn't make sense since the children weren't orphaned. I'll find and re-read that court action. The attorney may have been appointed as estate executor, not a guardian John (1826) operated a saloon on Wells St. in MKE in 1879 and 1880. After he died in 1880, his widow Anna and the children continued to live there until at least 1901. Where John (1826) was between 1873 (Any idea what brewery he was peddling beer for? For instance, was he selling West Bend beer in Milwaukee? If so, that would show a continued connection with West Bend. Otherwise, if he left his first family there, I wouldn't think he would be very welcomed!) when he married Anna Hinrichs and 1879 is a mystery. He is not in the city directories which, while known to miss folks, would not likely overlook him for six straight years. And the births of the boys, circa 1874 and 1876, are not registered in MKE county. Was he in West Bend? Mike, if you could get to WB and search for EMMEL births between 1873 and 1877, you might clear up some of the confusion. (I will check West Bend next week) Spoke to Joel last night - this is too complex to deal with by mail. The notes left by our mothers and their sisters show a child named 'Mary' somehow connected to John (1826). Lo and behold, the 1895 MKE directory says that living at the saloon at 604 Wells were Emmel (Is this "EMMEL" in reference to their last name or is it the first name of another person?), Annie, John M. (a clerk), Mary (a laundress), and Wm (a blacksmith.) Now we have a Mary to identify. (The only Mary Immel I have in my database was born to Peter on November 12, 1860. Could she be a wife of William's. I know he married Alma in 1903, but he would have been old enough in 1895 to have a wife. Could she be one of Anna Hinrich's unknown children?). But it looks like the Lena HENTZ (Somewhere I missed this; who was she supposed to be?) I've mentioned is not related to John 1826.

More About E LIZABETH IMMEL:Died 2: August 17, 1898, Obit in West Bend Democrat Burial: West Bend, Washington, WIsconsin74 Notes for J ACOB ENGMANN:From "History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties" Jacob Engmann, farmer and proprietor of Mineral Spring, Sec. 15; P.O. West Bend; is the son of Balthasar and Margarette Engmann; was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, May 21, 1825. Learned the brewer's trade, and came to the United States in 1848; made his home one year in Williamsburg, N.Y., where he worked at his trade. In 1849, he came to West Bend and engaged with Mr. Goetter in the brewery. He was married at West Bend May 19, 1851 to Elizabeth Immel, daughter of Peter Immel, who was born in Bavaria. (1828 Elizabeth born in Waldhambach to Peter and Elizabeth (SCHAD) IMMEL on 13 Nov. (Annweiler civil rec. - see 1803). Witnesses: Eliz. Escher and George Wolfer. Source: Immel and Hafner Familes by Thomas C. Ehlert) Continued at brewery work five years (until 1854), when he went on to a farm in the Town of Barton. After two years residence on the farm at Barton (1856), he returned to West Bend and spent one year in Mr. Goetter's employ; he then went to the Village of Pigsville in Germantown (1857). Here he kept hotel and farmed three years until 1860. From 1860 to 1871 he was in the brewery and saloon business at Waukesha. 1871 bought a farm and finding a brook with numerous springs, improved the stream and stocked )cultured) trout in it. His noted mineral springs are situated one mile due west from the West Bend Court House. Full descriptions and analysis of the springs are given in the history of the town of West Bend, as well asn an account of his trout-raising enterprise. (1871 Anna (HAFNER) IMMEL and husband sold for $500 28.52 acres to Jacob Engmann of Waukesha County. Land is south of the road (Chestnut street) that ran through the farm. (Wash. Co. Deeds, Vol. 28, p.25. 14 Mar. Source: Immel and Hafner Familes by Thomas C. Ehlert) Emma Engmann born Mar 12, 1873 in the Town of West Bend and died as Mrs Hetzel in 1963. A witness at her wedding was NORA IMMEL. Her sister (?) Appolonia Immel was born July 5, 1856 to John Immel and Elizabeth Weber Werner. Both were supposed to have had the same natural parents and have been adopted by Jacob and Elizabeth Engmann at same date. Note: Joel Cook believes that Emma may have been an illegitiment daughter of Apollonia and was also adopted by the Engmanns. So far no records about the births or adoptions of either have been uncovered. -------- Checked out the Waukesha (village and town of) Census records for any additional info on John Immel 1826, here's what I found: 1860 Federal Census - Village of Waukesha #3-3 Jacob Engmann, age 35, brewer. Elizabeth Engmann, age 31 Ebinina Emel, age 5 Ebinina Emel is apparently Apollonia Immel but they got her age wrong (should have been age 3) unless of course, she was born soon after John Immel 1826 and Elizabeth Werner were married in 1855 but the date recorded as 1857 ? No Immel is listed in the Waukesha village or town census for 1860. (Source: Mike Reilly Apr 2001) There was no listing that I could find in 1870 Census for Engmann or Immel in the Waukesha area; Jacob had returned to the West bend about this time. Jacob is listed in the Washington County 1880 Census records Town of West Bend #107-109 as being 55 yrs old. Living with him are Elizabeth his wife, age 50, and daughter Emma, age 7. ------ On May 8, 2001 checked the Waukesha County birth, death and marriage records at the court house and found no records pertaining to Engmann, or to any one named Emmel, Immel or similar names. For Emmel, checked the death records up until the early 1970's, found no one, which would indicate that the missing 1826 John Immel descendants from Milwaukee didn't die in Waukesha County after their departure (?) from Milwaukee. Checked the Property records section but nothing is indexed by surname from that time period, so can't determine if Jacob Engmann owned any property in the Village of Waukesha around the 1860 Census. Next step here would be to read the Waukesha newspapers from the time period of about 1859 to 1871 to find any clues to the family's activities. Also checked for any possible Probate and Civil suit records and found nothing for any Engmann, Emmel or Immel names. There are some Immels with civil suits listed but begin about 1989. Notes for W ILLIAM "BURGOMEISTER" JACOB HENRY MILLER, SR.:Stricken Dead While Fishing William Miller Suffers Apoplexy and Falls Into Lake Old and Esteemed Citizen of West Bend Taken Away Suddenly at Small Cedar Lake Sunday William Miller, one of West Bend's old and most highly esteemed residents, died last Sunday afternoon at about 6 o'clock, the final summons coming as he was fishing on small Cedar Lake. He and his son Stephen were in a boat in the middle of what is known as the "kettle". Just as Mr. Miller was about to reach for his lunch basket he was stricken, and as he collapsed, he strick the side of the boat, and fell into the lake. The son had rare presence of mind and jumped into the lake and grabbed his father by the coat collar and then was fortunate to get hold of the then overturned boat. He called loudly for help, and as the cries of distress were heard by young men at "Seldom In" cottage, assistance soon reached them. They were taken to the cottage, and in the hope that Mr. Miller might be revived, a physician was hurriedly summoned. However, Mr. Miller was beyond help, and thus another good man was taken from his family and friends. Mr. Miller was born in the town of West Bend on March 16, 1852. He married Miss Appolonia Immel on Sept. 30, 1879, and since 1880 the couple resided in West Bend. Mr. Miller was employed as teamster and malster at the local brewery for forty-eight years, and for this reson became widely known throughout the county. All who knew him were his friends. His evercheerful and happy disposition endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, and wherever good old "Buergermeister" Miller was there was life and good cheer. i his home he was an ideal husband and father, and as a citizen he was the ideal. He was respected by all who knew him, and his sad death is regretted by everyone. He is survived by his widow and the following-named children: Stephen and William of Milwaukee; Edwin of Jackson; Louis of Theresa; and John, Melinda and Herbert at home. He also leaves two brothers - Charles of Trenton, and Otto of the town of West Bend, also had three sisters - Mrs. Leopold Meyer, Sr., and Mrs. Frank Reuter of this city, and Mrs. William Fischer of Keowns. To these we extend our heartfelt sympathy. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, servoces being held in the German M.E. Church. Interment was made in Holy Angel's cemetery.
