Louis Miller

The following is important information about Louis Müller discovered by Cousin Robert "Bob" Joseph Miller, grandson of  Edwin "Murphy" George L. Miller, Sr., son of Roman Miller and Rose Schmitt:

Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 08:37:15 -0500

1. I found his Declaration of Intent for Naturalization at the Milwaukee Co Historical  Soc. I had looked earlier but was thrown off by a bad date. According to this document dated 12 Apr 1847, he arrived in New York in October 1845. It has what may be an authentic signature.

2. An "L. Müller, age 22" arrived on the Bark Minna in New York on 6 Oct 1845. (Also on board were a Peter Müller, 54 and John Müller, 29. They were not listed together so there may be no relationship.

3. The Hales Corners FHC has a CD set of the entire 1880 US Census (transcribed) with a comprehensive index. From that I found Louis Miller, Farmer, age 53(?) in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska. He is listed as "other" within the household of a restaurant keeper. (This seems appropriate to me.) Additionally, it shows the birthplace of his father as "ALLSTEAD" and his mother as "HANOVER." I'm trying to find out places that could be derived into ALLSTEAD. There is an AHSTEDT in Lower Saxony [in district of Hildesheim, municipality of Schellerten] which is southeast of Hannover (midway between Hannover and Braunschweig!!! Also not too far from LICHTENBERG; remember in Julia's death notice the she was from LICHTENHEIM [Name of town: Lichtenheim, Gemeinde: Karlskron - District (Kreis): Neuburg an der Donau (Danube) - Provincee: Schwaben - Evangelical (Evangelisch): Karlshuld - Catholic (Katholisch): Karlskron]. I'm excited the this may finally lead to a German connection for these folks!! There doesn't seem to be much in the LDS holdings about this area, so it might be my first attempt to write to German places to check into records.

Descendants of Louis "Lewis" (Müller or Muiller) Miller

Generation No. 1

1. LOUIS "LEWIS" (MÜLLER OR MUILLER)2 MILLER (NICHOLAUS1 MÜLLER) was born August 11, 1823 in Hanover (Hannover), Germany, and died August 01, 1889 in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska. He met JOHANNA D. JULIANA "JULIA" (BODE) BODEN November 25, 1848 in Port Washington, Ozaukee County, WI,; Vol 1 P 250, at Justice of Peace J.E. Young's home, Washington County, WI, daughter of JOHN BODEN and MARGARET SCHMAL. She was born January 08, 1823 in Lichtenheim, Braunsweig (Braunschweig), Germany, and died April 15, 1899 in (F2652), West Bend, Washington, Wisconsin.

Notes for LOUIS "LEWIS" (MÜLLER OR MUILLER) MILLER:

Member of Washington County Old Settler's Club; source: History of Washington County, Vol. 1.; Carl Quickert, editor; published by S.J. Clarke Publishing Company, Chicago; 1912; p. 249.

Settled in West Bend on November 05, 1845.

More about Louis's origin - When did he actually come to the U.S. and more so, when to West Bend? Did he change his name (shorten it)? or was he already in the U.S. at an earlier date and only emigrated to West Bend on November 5, 1845?

Louis Miller is not believed to be a very religious man - from all available text sources; none of the surrounding community churches find him as being a church founder or leading first member. Nor is he listed as being involved in any early governing of the community. The statements just made were based on reviewing West Bend related church activities not the Town of Addison where he first lived. Check further into the Addison/Hartford history.

Louis Sr. had a son Louis born abt 1849 (in 1850 Census as 1 yr old); could he be the Sheriff Miller (Source: History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881. page 359.) or the Town of West Bend Supervisor for 1877-78 and 1878-79 ? Source: History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881. page 382. No, according to Julia obit Sr was the Sheriff. Also, Jr was living in Paul, MI at her death.

Check Criminal Case # 743 Frame 1897 Micro Film Reel #13, John Findoff vs Lewis and Julia Mueller. Has to do with compliant of not paying mortgage or other loan on property in Town of Addison, dated 1853, with a 1862 date as well.

Further check Case # 2020, Frame # 1021 (check ringbinder for microfilm reel #); it was the Germantown Farmers Mutual Insurance Company vs Louis Miller, date unknown.

Town of West Bend, Washington, Wisconsin; source: Wisconsin Census 1855; five males and 3 females, (5) of which were foreign born. Other than Louis, Julia and Herman, who else?

====

Could it be that Louis Miller changed his name, perhaps shortened it like another emigrant from Bovenden, Hanover, one Ernst Franchenberg, born Nov 29, 1827, who came to West Bend in 1846; changed his name from Ernst von Frankenberg Ludwigsdorf for business purposes. Might Louis have had a longer name and it was shortened? From the Old Settlers Club, there aren't any other Germans from Hanover who settled at the same time as Louis did, and the few members from Hanover came at a much later date except for Ernst Franckenberg. Did Louis come alone then? In the 1850 Census he has settled among a number of other Millers close by which would seem to indicate a close relationship, but where did they come from (and where did they go to - check later Census records). If they stayed in the Washington County area, while aren't they members of the Old Settlers Club?

-----------------

So far, none of the Miller research in the Port Washington Reg of Deeds office has shown another Louis Miller/Mueller - Need to find out who the Louis Mueller below is

There was a Louis F. Mueller who belonged to the Port Washington Gesang Verein, a singing society, that put on many concerts mainly for charitable purposes. A Frederick Mueller and Carl Mueller were also members. It's said that during the winter season, farmers have been known to come through all kinds of weather, eight and ten miles (if this was our Louis Miller, he had to travel much father than 10 miles for meetings) to attend regular meetings. Society formed on Dec 3, 1859. Source: History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881. page 519.

Louis Mueller was also a member of the Turn Verein (The Turner Society) organized on May 14, 1860. Louis was the first elected Secretary. Source: History of Washington and Ozaukee Counties, 1881. page 519. The entry goes on to say that the society's founder Maj. John C. Schroeling was later made a First Lieutenant of Company C of the Fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and he was joined by some of his society members from Port Washington; one of which was Louis Mueller. So... was this our Louis Miller or another who lived in Port Washington? He isn't mentioned in the formation of the West Bend Turnverein formed in 1858.

------------------

Louis Miller is said to have died in Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska on August 1, 1889 but researcher Nancy Mancuso has been unable to find any record of his death. Official or newspaper obit. The only mention is in Julia's obit. In Louis's daughter Julia Fischer's obit, it's interesting to note that only her mother Julia is mentioned, not her father Louis; more fuel to the fire that perhaps Louis and Julia were estranged.

Why was Louis in Omaha in 1889 when he died; to visit relatives or was he living there?

Where is Louis buried? Thought it was at Union Cemetery, but Julia is buried along side son Otto, his wife and infant son.

New evidence from the internet shows that Louis's death date may be actually Aug 1, 1899, 3 1/2 mos after Julia died; if this is true, why did Julia sell off the family homestead to Otto at an earlier date? Was Louis incapacitated? The internet obit listing was in error, probably due to a poor transcription of the original Bev Hetzel newspaper obit summary by another individual.

Check the West Bend Probate office for a will, also see if there are any divorce records on any Millers (or Immels). No divorce or Probate records found for Louis and Julia. There was a criminal compliant filed in 1853 against them by one Mr. Findoff who alleges that they didn't pay him money promised on a mortgage note (?). Didn't copy case file since it was hard to read and the Clerk of Courts office wanted $1.25 per page even if I did the copying myself.

"Sheriff Miller went without delay to Milwaukee to make the arrest (of A. Semler). The ruined man had fled to parts unknown before Miller's arrival. Miller, with one of his Deputies, Peter Boden, after a disappearance of two weeks, traced him to Omaha, where they took him, half insane and nerves completely shattered, by the awful experiences of his flight and disgrace, and, on August 6, 1876, brought him back to the scene of his happiest days, a disgraced and ruined man, and lodged him in the county jail."

Now - according to the 1880 Federal Census for Washington County, Town or Village of West Bend; Louis Miller was not with his wife Julia (Juia is still listed as being married though). Louis Miller dies in Omaha on August 1, 1889.

I have a strong feeling that after he was no longer Sheriff (or on the Board of Supervisors) and had returned to farming, that he wasn't satisfied with his life, and moved on. Where he went from approx. 1877 to 1889, I'm not sure yet. I'm going to see if the West Bend newspapers have anything printed about his life after his last Sheriff term which may have ended during the Nov 1876 elections.

1890 Census was destroyed by fire, all that remains are the Civil War soldiers who still lived in Washington Co. in 1890. Louis Jr. was not one of them.

i. HERMAN3 MILLER, b. Abt. 1846, Braunsweig (Braunschweig), Germany; d. September 09, 1864, Civil War, Wisconsin 35th Reg., Morganzia, Louisiana.

Notes for HERMAN MILLER:

Herman's lineage is in question because he was born in Germany in 1846 when his father (?) Louis was already in Wisconsin in Nov 1845. His mother cam to Wisconsin in 1847 and she and Louis were married in Nov 1848. No mentions of her marital status other than Miss Juliana Bode is on the marriage cert.

Did Herman come from another father? Was he the result of a last minute roll-in-the-hay before Louis left for America? (Timing is about right). Were they married in Braunschweig or Hannover in Prussia, then remarried here? If Herman came from another father, what was his name; was Juliana's name her maiden or last married name?

ii. LOUIS MILLER, JR., b. Bet. January 01 - February 18, 1848, West Bend, Washington, Wisconsin.

Notes for LOUIS MILLER, JR.:

Louis Miller, Jr was 17 yrs old went enlisting (Feb 18, 1865) in the 48th Wisconsin Infantry Reg. Company e, and 17 when he mustered out in Dec 30, 1865; so his birthday maybe between Jan 1 and Feb 18. He listed for one year, mustering in Milwaukee, but crediting West Bend, Washington County. He received a bounty of $100 for enlisting of which he got $33.33 with balance due on mustering out..

He is described as being light in complexion, brown eyes and hair and 5 ft 7 in tall. On June 30, 1865, he rec'd another $33.33 plus an allotment of $87.66 for clothing in kind or money advanced (This may have included the $33.33).

Since the paperwork rec'd from the NARA were incomplete (?) Louis may have mustered out in Feb 1866 ?

Then where did he go? Did he become the sheriff of West Bend, not his father? No, he wasn't the Sheriff; this was confirmed by Julia's obit Apr 19, 1899 where it says that her husband Louis was the Sheriff. It noted that Louis Jr. was living in Paul, Michigan. Preliminary investigation shows no "Paul" today, but will further investigate. One possibility is it was "Paw Paw, MI.".

Stricken Dead While Fishing

William Miller Suffers Apoplexy and Falls Into Lake

Old and Esteemed Citizen of West Bend Taken Away Suddenly at Small Cedar Lake Sunday

William Miller, one of West Bend's old and most highly esteemed residents, died last Sunday afternoon at about 6 o'clock, the final summons coming as he was fishing on small Cedar Lake. He and his son Stephen were in a boat in the middle of what is known as the "kettle". Just as Mr. Miller was about to reach for his lunch basket he was stricken, and as he collapsed, he strick the side of the boat, and fell into the lake. The son had rare presence of mind and jumped into the lake and grabbed his father by the coat collar and then was fortunate to get hold of the then overturned boat. He called loudly for help, and as the cries of distress were heard by young men at "Seldom In" cottage, assistance soon reached them. They were taken to the cottage, and in the hope that Mr. Miller might be revived, a physician was hurriedly summoned. However, Mr. Miller was beyond help, and thus another good man was taken from his family and friends.

Mr. Miller was born in the town of West Bend on March 16, 1852. He married Miss Appolonia Immel on Sept. 30, 1879, and since 1880 the couple resided in West Bend. Mr. Miller was employed as teamster and malster at the local brewery for forty-eight years, and for this reson became widely known throughout the county. All who knew him were his friends. His evercheerful and happy disposition endeared him to all with whom he came in contact, and wherever good old "Buergermeister" Miller was there was life and good cheer. i his home he was an ideal husband and father, and as a citizen he was the ideal. He was respected by all who knew him, and his sad death is regretted by everyone. He is survived by his widow and the following-named children: Stephen and William of Milwaukee; Edwin of Jackson; Louis of Theresa; and John, Melinda and Herbert at home. He also leaves two brothers - Charles of Trenton, and Otto of the town of West Bend, also had three sisters - Mrs. Leopold Meyer, Sr., and Mrs. Frank Reuter of this city, and Mrs. William Fischer of Keowns. To these we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, servoces being held in the German M.E. Church. Interment was made in Holy Angel's cemetery.
