 The Wine Messenger

Mike Reilly's Wine & Beer Background / Credentials

"Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so I may wet my brain and say something clever." - Aristophanes

What you'll find contained on these wine information web pages isn't the work of a Master Sommelier, or Professional Wine Taster, but just an average person, that when an interest arises, gets a scratch to find out more about the subject, and usually ends up compiling the information and adding some additional personal insight/comments. This is pretty true of everything you'll find on on this website, including our local historical Society's at www.slahs.org which I write for and maintain. I've worked 33 years for the largest medical manufacturer in the world performing a wide variety of jobs in engineering and manufacturing, so unless I'm away vacationing, much of my recreational time is spent being inquisitive, generally with too many irons in the fire at one time. Something that probably won't change much when I get around to retiring. I hope these pages will somehow benefit this website's visitors as many have been with other topics.

bulletRaised on Pabst Blue Ribbon short-fill bottles directly from the Milwaukee Brewery.
bulletFirst wine was my mother's Mogen David Concord Grape.
bulletSampled a couple of sacramental wines as an altar boy. Note: It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month ...which we know today as the honeymoon.
bulletBought first case of beer while under-age in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin
bulletDrank first case of over-heated/jostled beer from car truck on lonely road with buddies.
bulletNewsletter Editor for Milwaukee Antique Bottle & Advertising Club two years. Wrote Club's 25th Anniversary book.
bulletStop at every microbrew house and winery to sample and buy, fine strong ales, and delicious wines while vacationing.
bulletWrote chronological history of Schlitz Brewing Company - see www.chiptin.com home page.
bulletThoroughly enjoy stouts, triples, bocks, Belgians, and of course; those Irish ales. Note: Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim, or handle, of their ceramic cups.  When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.
bulletMidwest Editor for Bottles & Extras magazine for a year.
bulletTired of White Zinfandels at every dinner. Felt need to kick it up a notch - Bam! Bam!
bulletTook course "Wine - Unlocking the Mystique", at Waukesha County Technical College in the Fall of 2004
bulletFell in love with Gewürztraminer; had stopped at Discount Liquor, Waukesha, Wisconsin; a Columbia-Crest vintage was on sale, bought and enjoyed it. My very first !
bulletDesigned these web pages as a tribute to Gewürztraminer wine.
bulletHave been providing free information on antiques and collectibles on the internet since 1997 - see www.chiptin.com
bulletAlways looking for a new (or older) vintage of Gewürztraminer to taste, and/or list on these web pages; though tasting is more fun.
bulletFor recreational wine drinking, it's boxed Rhine (Riesling) wine from Peter Vella, Almaden, or Franzia. For those nights after work, too tired to work at tasting a cellared bottled wine; has been a favorite for 30+ years. Franzia is a lighter (in body and color), less fragrant and sweeter than the Almaden. "Where there is plenty of wine, sorrow and worry take wing"
bullet A wine course, "Wine - Unlocking the Mystique", at our Waukesha County Technical College in the Fall of 2004 opened my eyes up to the world of wines beyond the White Zinfandel labels and fruity (cranberry, cherry, apple, etc.) wines so often found in our beautiful State of Wisconsin. The winery business in Wisconsin appears to be developing; growing their own grape varietals, besides those grapes and juices brought in from vineyards across the U.S. to make their true wines, but sadly, no Gewürztraminers, other than from grapes/grape juice purchased from out-of-state.
bulletPrefer my wines to stand on their own legs and judge them as such. I don't seek out foods to pair up with, but don't pass up the mating game.
bulletJust like a good wine, I, and these web pages, will get better over time!

"To love what you do and feel that it matters--how could anything be
more fun?"
--- Katharine Graham (1917-2001)

Bacchus in Roman religion and mythology, god of wine; in Greek mythology, Dionysus. Dionysus was also the god of tillage and law giving. He was worshiped at Delphi and at the spring festival, the Great Dionysia. In Rome, the mysteries of his cult were closely guarded, and he was identified with an ancient god of wine, Liber Pater. Many legends connected with Dionysus were also used in the cult of Bacchus. Source: The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition.  2001.
