Gewürztraminer 1999 Vintages and Tasting Notes

Updated 04/06/2007

On these pages I'm beginning to build a listing of tasting notes gathered from the internet, other sources, and my own personal experiences. I hope as time goes on that I will be able to taste many of these vintages/labels, especially those already enjoyed by Ms. Sue Courtney (identified with a  22Aug2004 style date code in the notes) and compare taste buds. I also list other winery vintages I have yet to taste myself or have found other tasting notes for. Those identified with an * are in my cellar either awaiting uncorking, or have been and my taste impressions await  inclusion in description..

Important: If you know of a Gewürztraminer wine not listed, and /or have tasting notes for the wine, or have tasting notes for a wine already listed (whether it has notes already doesn't matter), please contact me with your information. Whether you're a winery, winemaker, or just love to drink wine, please feel free to add to these listings.

Submitting Gewürztraminer Wines for Review: Wines should be submitted to

GWTRAMINER SAMPLER, W259 N9116 Hwy 164, Hartland, WI. 53029-9010, U.S.A.

There is no charge or reimbursement for wines submitted, and though all submitted wines will be tasted, I can't guarantee that this will occur, or that a review will appear on this website. For each wine submitted, please send (2) bottles, unless limited by production, then (1) bottle will be satisfactory.

Airlie 1999 Gewurztraminer, Willamette Valley, Oregon

Chateau Benoit Gewürztraminer 1999 label was the last when winery purchased and renamed Anne Amie Vineyards; the grapes for the 1999 vintage came from a vineyard owned by Dave Wurz in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Eola Hills Wine Cellars 1999 Late Harvest Gewurztraminer "Vin d' Epice", Pressed from late harvest frozen Gewurztraminer grapes, our "Vin d Epice" is unctuous, honeyed and spicy on the palate with flavors reminiscent of apricots and guavas. While the wine is very sweet, the firm acidity keeps it from being cloying. $15.95

Fetzer Vineyards 1999 California Gewürztraminer, America’s best selling Gewürztraminer is a sweet wine with a crisp, spritzy texture, litchi nut and pink grapefruit character. Good aperitif. $8.00

Fromm Malanzer Gewürztraminer 1999, Subtle spicy flavours; a multi-dimensional, elegant wine. Primarily a red wine producer, this release comprises four white wines including our first dry Riesling and a tiny quantity of Gewürztraminer, the only white wine grown at our own Fromm Vineyard.

Henry Estate 1999 Gewurztraminer, Henry Estate Winery, Umpqua Valley

Henry of Pelham Family Estate Winery 1999 Gewürztraminer (1) VQA, Canadian, Winemakers Notes: This is not a shy wine. The aromatic fruit and spice of this grape are apparent in waves of aroma and flavour. The evolution of this wine in bottle is usually also quite dramatic, and frequently finds an optimum point with 1 to 4 years of bottle age. I find this a particularly good example of this wine, only produced by Henry of Pelham when the wine warrants it. 12.3% alc. Price: (Ontario) Retail: $13.95;

Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA). The VQA is an "Appellation of Origin" system by which consumers can identify the wines of Ontario based on the origin of the grapes from which they are produced. With the VQA system, Canada joins other leading wine-producing countries in developing a body of regulations and high standards for its finest wines.

Leonard Kreusch "Twisted River" Gewürztraminer, Germany 1999.  $9;  fun and snazzy to drink as the blue bottle it came in.  Bright grapefruit, zingy but well balanced acidity, rich texture and a not-too-sweet sweetness. Source: http://jacobratner.bravepages.com/Wine_Archives/Wine_June02.htm

Louis M. Martini 1999: This wine was picked quite ripe, then cold fermented for maximum fruit retention. It spent 11 months sur lie, giving it a particular palate intensity and fullness of mouth. Unlike previous vintages, we finished this wine a touch sweet – but it has so much going on that the sweetness is negligible. Gravenstein apples with honey, cinnamon and orange blossoms are the aromas that greet you. These same flavors are very pronounced on the palate with a finish that just won't quit. This long finish is usually an indicator of a wine that is going to be able to withstand some time in the bottle.— Michael Martini, Winemaker. 14.5% alc., $15

Meridian Vineyards Gewürztraminer Santa Barbara County 1999, $7.98

Murphy Goode Murphy Ranch Gewurztraminer 1999

Oliver Winery (Bloomington, IN) Gewürztraminer 1999, Slightly acidic, lightly syrupy, dry (-Sara's winos) Sara's rating: 88 Tasted on: 2001-01-18 at Sara's Winetasting Group

Gewuerztraminer Kabinett Rheinpfaltz German 1999, $19.24, the Kabinett style makes this a semi-fruity wine in taste. It is a perfect wine either by itself or if you want to spice up a good dinner it will enhance almost any dish. Especially pairs well with glazed ham, Chinese sweet-sour dishes. It is also exceptional with pork and applesauce or turkey with cranberries. Serve chilled!!

Willamette Valley Vineyards 1999 Gewurztraminer, Oregon
