Abarbanel Gewurztraminer Mevushal
NV, $12.99; Wine
Spectator 85 Points Note: Abarbanel wines are produced by the Abarbanel Family- the world's oldest Jewish family, tracing it's heritage to ancient Israel and most notably to Don Isaac Abarbanel, the renowned Torah commentator and last and greatest leader of Spanish Jewry before the expulsion in 1492. Abarbanel Gewurztraminer Mevushal Kosher 2002, '00, '99, $15.99-17.99 2002 - Suggested retail is $16.99 2000 - “Intense aromas and flavors of pear, with a hint of banana. Not typical for the variety, yet it’s an attractive white, soft and inviting. Drink now.” Wine Spectator, July 31, 2004. 85 pts. 1999 - Abarbanel Gewürztraminer wine from Alsace is restrained, yet this white shows grapefruit and litchi flavors matched to a firm, lean structure, and it's balanced and harmonious. Good lingering finish. It also packs a wallop of perfume and spices, with layers of chrysanthemums and dried fig on the palate, and a mineral chalky finish. (Mevushal). 1999 vintage Gewurz made its debut for Rosh HaShanah 2000 and is the vintage available in most stores for the 2001 High Holiday season. Deep mineral and earth tones will make this an instant classic for friends of Haut-Rhin, high elevation Alsacian wines. "Restrained, this white shows grapefruit and litchi flavors matched to a firm, lean structure, yet it's balanced and harmonious. Good lingering finish. Kosher. Drink now. "Wine Spectator September 30, 2001. 86 pts. 1997 - Gewurztraminer was rated as one of America's Top Kosher Wines by Bon Appetit Magazine and is a Silver Medal Winner from the Tasters Guild. Abarbanel Vin d'Alsace Gewürztraminer 1999 Estate Bottled packs a wallop of perfume and spices, with layers of chrysanthemums and dried fig on the palate, and a mineral chalky finish"Deborah and Howard Spiegelman, Washington Jewish Week, March 2001. $20.99 Abarbanel Gewürztraminer, The 1995 vintage (still available in some stores) was a Gold Medal Winner at the International Eastern Wine Competition and is a dry style Gewurz. The 1997 vintage (more readily available) is "Vendange Tardive," or Late Harvest, meaning a sweeter style as the grapes accumulated more residual sugar from a longer stay on the vines. Both wines are powerful on the palate -- your tongue will be hit with instantaneous assaults of sugar and spice, oak and herbs. Gewurztraminers are perhaps one of the only white wines that can stand up to steak. Recommended food pairings are with Asian cuisine, especially Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Korean foods. We also recommend pairing this wine with hot Mexican and Spanish dishes -- a great companion to chili con carne. Great for dessert on its own. The 1997 Gewurztraminer was rated as one of America's Top Kosher Wines by Bon Appetit Magazine and is a Silver Medal Winner from the Tasters Guild. Our new 1999 vintage Gewurz made its debut last year for Rosh HaShanah 2000 and is the vintage available in most stores for the 2001 High Holiday season. Deep mineral and earth tones will make this an instant classic for friends of Haut-Rhin, high elevation Alsacian wines. Suggested retail is $16.99. Gan Eden Late-Harvest Gewürztraminer 2000, $14.00, Producing nonmevushal and mevushal wines; located in Sonoma County's Green Valley, between the cities of Sebastopol and Forestville. 11 medals in 2002 and 9 in 2003 season, including 3 golds! Delicious!! Slightly sweeter than the '97, at 9% residual sugar (as opposed to 8% for the '97), but beautifully acid balanced, this may be my best Late Harvest Gewurztraminer to date. Gan Eden Late-Harvest Gewürztraminer 1997, This is the wine to serve with citrusy, light desserts. Aromatic and balanced, it's great by itself as an aperitif, but even better at the end of a meal. It can also be used to create incredible sorbets for intermezzo purposes. 12 medals in 2000. Gan Eden Late-Harvest Gewürztraminer 1996, $11.99 Golan Heights Winery Yarden Gewurztraminer 2002 combines aromatic orange, fresh floral and juicy lychee characters with hints of honey and spice. This flavorful wine has good body and intensity of flavor. It`s trace of sweetness rounds it out, contributing to its long, tasty finish. We enjoy a cool glass of Yarden Gewurztraminer as an aperitif with canapés, or with spicy cuisine, such as a good Indian chicken curry. This wine is ready to enjoy but will age gracefully over a couple of years if well stored. The 2002 Yarden Gewurztraminer is made entirely from Gewurztraminer grapes grown in the northern Golan Heights vineyard of El Rom. This cool climate of this vineyard allows the fruit to develop full varietal character. A cold fermentation in stainless steel preserves these traits in the wine. 14% alc. The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel. The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel. The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter. The Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin, in the central Golan.
