Sebastiani Winery Gewürztraminer Rosa 1977, California; From the rear wine label, Sam Sebastiani noted: "It has long been my belief that the natural pinkish hue of the Gewurz Traminer grape traditionally lost during the winemaking process could be preserved. The result, in essence, would be a rosé (pink) Gewurz Traminer -- a wine that paid a visual tribute to its original. The last year of our recent drought, 1977, gave me a clue as to how such an unusual wine might be created. The severe drought gave us smaller berries and a greater amount of color in the juice. Allowing this juice to remain on the skins for an extended period after crushing further enhanced the body with additional character. Even with the traditional color drop during fermentation and aging, a distinctive blush and character remained. I now present to you our first offering of this truly unique wine." I emailed the winery asking about this vintage; here is the reply I received Wednesday, January 26, 2005 11:47 AM:

Dear Michael,
Thank you for your inquiry. We no longer make a Gewurztraminer and haven't for quite some time. Unfortunately, we have limited records on our Gewurztraminer production of the past, so I don't have much more information for you. I apologize. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Cheers,
