Note: The foundation for this index to the Gewurztraminer
producers of Alsace, France was Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide, 3rd Edition,
by Robert M. Parker, Jr., 1993. All wine tasting notes/comments are either those
of the respective winery and/or of dealers of wine & spirits on the
internet. Where possible, the origin/source of the tasting note/comment is
given, if known.
In Parker's Wine
Buyer's Guide, 1989 - 1990 Edition, by Robert M. Parker, Jr., A Fireside Book,
© 1989, on page 52, he lists what he considered the best Gewurztraminers of
Alsace. I've identified these producers/vineyards below with an # before
the producer's name. Note: Not all of a Producer's product may have this
designation, in fact some vintages dating after Mr. Parker's publication may not
considered the best.
From
the tasting notes and ratings I've seen, Zind-Humbrecht is probably considered
the best overall Gewurztraminer producer, and is the benchmark to measure
Alsatian Gewurztraminer against.

Charles Baur Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Pfersigberg 2002,
This wine comes from one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards of Alsace. Its
calcareous soil gives the wine elegance, finesse and freshness in addition to
the richer attributes commonly found in this varietal such as aromas of rose, lychee
and candied fruit and a semi-sweet palate impression with a round, full
body. Enjoy with as an aperitif or with foie gras, exotic foods and desserts.

|
Charles Baur Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Eichberg 2000,
This is a very classy style of Gewurztraminer that displays quite well the soil
character of the site. It is properly dry and full of vibrant, refreshing
acidity, never cloying, yet still pungently spicey. $18.99

€); Tasting
notes: By Jean Michel Deluc : Master SommelierEye - A
wine of a pronounced gold color with shadings of gold that extend to the edge of
the glass. The wine is bright and limpid and the wine has a fat aspect in the
glass, indicating superb concentration. Nose - The
nose is intense and conjures up exotic fragrances. You'll detect aromas of
roses.

Furstentum Gewurztraminer (VT) 2000, 13.5% alc.; The wine is aged on its
lees in large oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is then bottled and aged for 4
to 5 more years before being put on sale. Enjoy it within the following 10
years, at the height of its aromatic freshness!

Paul
Blanck Furstentum Gewurztraminer Vieilles Vignes 2000 The wine is matured on
its lees in large oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is then bottled and aged
for 2 to 3 further years before being offered for sale. Winery
Tasting note: A very fine yellow gold colour. Warm yellow-gold-green
straw tints. The nose has exquisite aromatic smoothness; delicate and at the
same time very stylish, with rose, grapefruit, litchi aromas... on a backdrop of
fine spice, and orange blossom. Delicate peppery touches. The attack is clearcut
and regular in the mouth. Nicely smooth, without any heaviness. The vinous
structure is finely disseminated. Blossoms beautifully, warmly, in the glass, it
is enticing, with finesse and distinction.
|
|
Paul
Blanck Furstentum Gewurztraminer (SGN) 1999 Bottling
then takes place, and the wine is aged for 4 to 5 years before being offered for
sale. This wine is more powerful than the Vendanges Tardives, and may be kept
for 15 years or more.15% alc.; Winery Tasting
note: Appearance: Deep golden yellow, glittering brilliantly. A
sumptuous, voluptuous nose redolent of tropical fruit and crystallized fruit.
Among the numerous aromas crystallized lemon, citrus fruit, rose and spice are
detectable. In the mouth the wine is concentrated, full-bodied and exquisitely
harmonious, with splendid aromatic length, raspberry and cooked banana flavours,
perfectly constituted, with a slightly spicy finish. The attack is rich, smooth
and fresh, with great finesse, and gives an impression of raisins and tropical
fruit. A wine which is gradually taking shape.
|
|
Press Note :
-Deeply pitched aromas of honey, earth and fig, along with some roasted high
tones. Fat, dense and expressive, with more earth, fig and date flavors than
ripe fruit. Shows good vineyard character, but finishes slightly warm and
bitter-edged. Could use a bit more freshness. Stephen Tanzer’s,
International Wine Cellar-July/ August 2001 Has been awarded a SEAL OF
APPROVAL by the tasting panet at the International Wine Challenge 2004.

Paul Blanck 1999 Gewurztraminer Maimbourg, Winepros' Notes: Clive Coates MW Jun 01 2000 "In
tank. After the Rieslings and Tokays this is less expressive, especially on the
attack but the follow-through is ripe and has good definition. A little
one-dimensional. Drink from 2002."

Cave Vinicole de Pfaffenheim &
Gueberschwihr Gewurztraminer 2002, Alsace,
France. Open opulent honey, spicy, mineral, floral, lychee fruit nose.
Very ripe on the palate with round sift textures and plenty of sweetness. Lots
of honey, spicy, mineral, dried lychee and peach flavours make for a rich
powerful, fat, white wine that still finishes with dry mineral streaks.

Cave
de Ribeauville Gewürztraminer
1999, Alsace, "Weingarten", Brilliant,
rich, light gold color; big, complex, fruity, peach, kiwi, floral, honey,
wax, almond, litchie nut, spicy and mineral aromas with a hint of
matchstick (rubber?, SO2?);
sweet entry, ripe, deep, off-dry, honey, spicy, mineral flavors;
mild mouthfeel, lush, round, oily texture, unctuous, viscous, full
body; well balanced, with just enough tartness and backbone; short, tangy,
peach pit, slightly bitter finish. 13.5% alcohol. The big, spicy nose and
full-bodied, oily texture argue for this wine coming pretty close to
varietally-correct, classic Alsatian Gewürztraminer. The front label is a
Pascal Henri Poirot painting and the winery name is only printed in very tiny
letters on the back label. ($17.50)

Dopff & Irion Gewurztraminer 1995, ($13.99). A more user-friendly, less overblown style of

#Dopff & Irion Gewurztraminer Les Sorcières 1993,
($20.99). Classic, yet somewhat restrained, Gewurztraminer. The less flamboyant
style eliminates the usual "is-it-sweet-or-dry?" question in the
taster's mind, but there's still plenty of candied citrus, roasted nut, and
floral stuff going on here. Excellent structure supports it all, and I believe
this one will age and mature gracefully - Thor Iverson
