The Domaine
Zind Humbrecht was created in 1959 by the union of the family owned properties
of Zénon Humbrecht, winegrower at Gueberschwihr and of Emile Zind, winegrower
in Wintzenheim, when Leonard Humbrecht married Geneviève Zind. Before this date
each of our families were producing and selling their wines under their own
name. Winegrower from father to son since the Thirty Years war in Europe (1620)
the Humbrecht family has long winemaking traditions. Today Léonard and Ginette,
as well, as Olivier and Margaret Humbrecht are working together at the Domaine
and the Domaine Zind Humbrecht has 40 hectares, large by Alsace standards,
vineyards located in five different villages in the Haut-Rhine.
It has vines in
4 Grands Crus - Rangen, Goldert, Hengst and Brand.
Vines are planted in high density and yields are severely restricted. The wines
are vinified in oak foudres in their new state-of-the-art cellars outside
Turckheim. Olivier Humbrecht produces some of the region's most
aromatic, powerful and well-structured wines. They all benefit from cellar
ageing.
Any regular
reader of the Wine Advocate knows of Robert Parker's admiration for the
remarkable Alsatian wines of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. In the June 1999 issue
Parker referred to Olivier Humbrecht's "complete dedication to
quality" and went on to speculate that "this tall, powerful, and
intellectual 36 year old man may well be the finest winemaker in the
world."

Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl 1999: A little deeper in
colour. A very expressive nose, full of volcanic rocks, with a almond praline
note and exotic, perfumed, lychee fruit. Definitely some development here - this
is much less primary than my last tasting. The palate is rich, fat, saturated in
flavour and texture, concentrated and expressive. A well composed wine, showing
appropriate balance - elegance even - despite acidity being typically on the low
side.

Tardive 2002 -
Medium yellow color. Pleasing, soft, exotic nose is just peachy, in every sense
of the word. Tremendous vitality, freshness, and attack on the palate with
gorgeous sweet lechee fruit and vibrant acidity; penetrating yet elegant. Long,
spicy finish. The

#Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Hengst 1999, $37.99. Medium yellow-gold color.
Nose of sweet lemon-lime, petrol, nut, stem, and citron. Sweet, smooth complex
spicy mouthfeel, with a light raisin and nut quality throughout, and long smooth
finish.

#Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Hengst 1998: A lovely golden
hue. Full, heady, tropical fruit nose, of tangerine, white peach and lychee,
with a touch of bacon fat, rose petal character, with some notes of botrytis..
This has elegance combined with richness. Full, structured, somewhat earthy on
the palate, becoming really creamy and opulent through the mid-palate. The
texture persists through to the finish, with typically low acid but a pleasing,
tingling spice. Drink over the next eight years.

1988: A characterful nose here, full of classic aromas of mandarins, lychees and
bacon. The palate is full with plenty of texture. Quite dry now. Firm and
structured, with notes of lychee, orange fruit and marmalade coming through
towards the finish.
