The Winemaker: Stony Hill Vineyard

"In Vino Veritas" (Truth in Vine)

Updated 04/06/2007

1957 marked the first vintage of Stony Hill Gewürztraminer, the ancient and revered varietal grape of Alsace. Made bone dry in the Alsatian style. Perhaps the oldest or one of the earliest Traminers (Gewürztraminers) produced in California.

Stony Hill Vineyard Gewürztraminer 2003, Tasting Notes: Our 2003 Gewürztraminer is pale straw in color and the first whiff is redolent of grapefruit and lots of perfume and flowers. No one can miss the distinctive Gewurztraminer aroma, and it provoked Mike Chelini to ask, "What do pearls smell like?" No one can really describe the scent, yet it's evocative of rose petals, leading you expect a sweetness in the taste. But this wine is bone dry with a notable acid balance. Shockingly delicate now in its youth, it will begin to develop spiciness and richness within a year and promises to age for ten years or more. Hot chilies, whether Thai-inspired or from the Texas Panhandle, make the wine taste sweet and opulent. NRRP Stony Hill Vineyards Gewürztraminer, Napa. (RP laments the fact that he hadn't tasted the winery's vintages ('85-'87) because of the quality of their Chardonnays, page 794.)
