Finger Lakes Wine Country is the home of America’s very first bonded winery, established over 140 years ago. In fact, Finger Lakes wineries produce more wine than any other region east of the Rockies.

Robert M. Parker, Jr. doesn't mention any other states that produced Gewürztraminer in his 1989 other than California, Oregon, and New Jersey.

Goose Watch Winery Traminette 2003, $9.50, Made from a new premium wine grape developed by Cornell University, our Traminette is very dry, with a distinctive spicy finish that is reminiscent of Gewurztraminer, (which is one of Traminette's parent varieties). The crisp fruit flavors and spicy finish make this wine a great accompaniment to many oriental dishes. GOLD MEDAL WINNER IN RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA! 0.5% Residual Sugar.

King Ferry Winery, the winery produces award-winning Treleaven Wines including a  Gewürztraminer. Editor note: no GW vintage currently offered on their website. The King Ferry Winery, owned and operated by Peter and Tacie Saltonstall, releases limited quantities of their Treleaven wines.

Editor's note: To Kings Ferry Winery - I was checking your website, and although you claim to produce a Gewurztraminer, no GW vintage is currently offered on your website. Reply: Hi Mike, We do grow Gewt. but the last to winters have been devastating to the Finger Lakes for Gewt. We have to see what Mother Nature has dealt us for the year's vintage. check back in mid summer Then I will be able to let you know if what will have a 2005 vintage. Such is the life a farmer. Thanks  for your inquiry into our Treleaven wines.

Lakeshore Winery, Lakeshore Winery is owned and operated by John and Annie Bachman, who purchased the property in June of 1994 from the winery's founders, Bill and Doris Brown. Bill and Doris purchased the property in 1978, and immediately planted Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The first vintage was in 1981, and they began selling wine in 1982. All of our grapes come from our own vineyard or neighboring Finger Lakes vineyards. Editor note: no GW vintage currently offered on their website.

Editor's note: "Did you ever produce a GW vintage? What happened to the GW vines?" Reply - Mr. Reilly, I gather you are a Gewurz fan.  Are you a grower, winemaker, consumer (Answer - Consumer and Advocate), or some combination of the above? When we came to Lakeshore in 1994, we inherited a small inventory of bottled wine which we sold, but we never managed to make a decent Gewurztraminer vintage of our own.  The wines were mostly healthy, but the fruit was highly subject to botrytis and other problems, and the small amount of good fruit we were able to harvest wasn't enough to do much with.  We decided after a few years to replace all of the vines with Cabernet Sauvignon.  Ironically, the Gewurz vines proved to be difficult to get rid of - despite repeated attempts to destroy them, some are still coming back. Sorry to disappoint you.  There are a few Finger Lakes wineries that make Gewurz - Standing Stone on Seneca Lake comes to mind.  The grapes are in very short supply.

Lucas Vineyards Gewürztraminer 2002, $13.99/Bottle, This dry style wine has classic floral aromas and well balanced spicy flavors.  In 1974, the Lucas Family followed their dream and moved from the New York City borough of the Bronx to a farm in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. Farm advisors told the Lucas' they could make a good living on their 68-acre farm by growing grapes for one of the big wineries in Hammondsport. They planted their first vines in 1975 and trucked their first crop to the Taylor winery in 1978. At Taylor, the Lucas' watched in dismay as their carefully nurtured, hand-picked grapes were dumped into giant hoppers with truckload of grapes from other growers. A highlight of the Lucas' grape growing days was when they sold their Cayuga White grapes to Glenora Wine Cellars. Glenora produced the very first Cayuga White commercial wine from Lucas Vineyards grapes. It was a natural progression for the Lucas' to open their own winery in 1980, the first on Cayuga Lake. Their debut vintage of 400 cases won gold and silver medals at the NY State Fair Wine Competition.

Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars 2002 Gewürztraminer, $19.95, The Gewürztraminer is just off-dry, rich and spicy. There's an engaging rose petal bouquet; the rare, fleeting essence of this varietal. Few winemakers in the Finger Lakes make this wine. Most of those who do, make it well, but this is one of the best. Amenti International Wine Competition: Double Gold Medal Long Beach Grand Cru: Gold Medal.  Vinification: The grapes were picked beginning October after a very warm Summer and a cool Fall. The grapes were crushed, pressed and the juice was cold settled. The juice fermented in stainless steel and the fermentation was stopped after two weeks with a small amount of natural sugar remaining. The wine was racked, filtered on diatomaceous earth, cold stabilized and adjusted for bottling. Description: The '02 offering shows the characteristic aromas of rose petals, grapefruit and mango as well as the spiciness associated with the Gewürztraminer variety. The slight residual sugar balances the phenolic elements typical of Gewurztraminer and the wine presents a long, clean finish. This wine can be paired with spicy dishes with great success. Analysis: Alcohol:   12.6, Acidity  .43/100 ml (expressed in tartaric), pH  3.63, SO2  35/109, Sugar  5 g/l or 0.5%

Gewürztraminer, 2001, Florida State Fair International Wine Competition: Gold Medal. Great Lakes Great Wine Competition: Gold Medal. Long Beach Grand Cru: Gold Medal.

The McGregor family established their winery in 1980 and began producing Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir that year.

Rock Stream Vineyards Gewurtztraminer, $11.99, a wildly spicy white wine, fermented in cool stainless steel, bursting with flavor, yet silky smooth in finish. Rock Stream Vineyards is one of the Finger Lakes’ newest wineries and it’s entirely family-owned and operated. We grow our own grapes, bottle and produce our own wine and even design and print our own labels. We are also building a tasting room on Route 14 and Fir Tree Point Road with an opening date in early 2005. The vineyard has 40 acres of vines producing 230 tons of grapes annually to supply several large wineries. Using a small fraction of our production, the winery focuses on producing premium, hand-crafted wines in small batches. The wines undergo a long, cool fermentation in small stainless steel tanks to concentrate flavor and bouquet. The result is a clean, crisp, and balanced taste that makes Rock Stream wine so unique and unforgettable.

Atwater Estate Wineyards Gewürztraminer 2003, $18.00, made in the Alsatian-style - low in residual sugar, with a higher alcohol content.  Its unmistakable bouquet displays notes of tangerine,  rose petals, and grapefruit.  Our Gewürztraminer vines are situated on the southwest slope of our farm to maximize solar exposure, which produces a high natural sugar content and raises the alcohol during fermentation. Vineyard & Wine Data:  Acres:7, Year first planted: 1988, Residual Sugar: .5%, Alcohol: 12.5%, Acid: .78, pH: 3.42, Cases produced: 190. The increased demand for Vinifera vines prompted Weimer in 1973 to establish a separate nursery operation to fill his own and other vintners' needs. He now produces 300,000 vines a year and supplies the major wine producing areas of North America. Varieties include but are not limited to Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewurztraminer on 3309 and S04 rootstock.

Fragrant aroma. $13.00; New Land Vineyards opened in 1982 and was a pioneer in growing Vinifera grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir.  By 1987, New Land Vineyard was employing traditional European methods to produce wines of exceptional quality. On September 4, 2001, Dale J. Nagy, an Ohioan smitten with the Finger Lakes took over the winery and changed the name to Nagy’s New Land Vineyards & Winery.  As an experienced  winemaker, Nagy continues the commitment to quality that has been a trademark of the New Land Vineyard. Born in Cleveland,  Nagy spent the last eighteen years in Akron, where he worked in quality assurance in the automotive industry.  However, his love was making wine.  Winemaking has been a  family tradition for many generations.  Nagy's Hungarian and Italian heritage sparked his passion. Unlike the winery’s founder,  Nagy will turn all of the vineyard’s grapes into wine rather than selling a large percentage of them.  And all of the wines produced at Nagy’s New Land will continue to come from our own vineyards.

The vineyard was planted exclusively with the classic European grape varieties Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. From the beginning the concept has been a small estate vineyard (currently about 10 acres) and an artisan wine cellar focusing on a few dry varietal table wines. Gewurztraminer has recently been added to the vineyard.

Arbor Hill Dry Traminette, $16.75, This wine is one of the most exciting new grape varietals in the Finger Lakes Region. Traminette is a first generation progeny of the famous Gewürztraminer grape as grown in the Alsace region of northeast France. The seed that gave birth to Traminette was one planted at the Geneva Experimental Station in 1968. Traminette's heritage, however, traces back to its parent Gewurztraminer in the village of Tramin, Italy, around 1000 a.d. Working with this varietal since 1985, the winemaker can attest to Traminette's superb wine quality which exemplifies the fresh fruit, spicy characteristic of its parent. Traminette wines now cellared for 10 years exhibit a diminished presence of spiciness but a luscious mouth-filling increase in honey and apricot flavors. It's truly a wine to be savored for years.

Arbor Hills Classic Traminette - $16.75, Sweet-spicy white wine with a floral aroma, a child of Gewürztraminer (German for spice), The Classic Traminette is our "signature" wine. We were the first winery in the world to introduce this baby of the famous Gewürztraminer. ("Gewurz" in German means spice.) This wonderful new creation is a cross between Gewürztraminer and a French-American varietal, Johannes Seyve 23-416. Traminette has a spicy fruit characteristic with nice apricot and honey overtones. Truly a wine to be savored for years. As Traminette ages it takes on flavors reminiscent of the great French Sauternes. Traminette has won many prestigious awards. In every competition it enters, it comes home with an award. It has been recognized several times at the Jefferson Classics as an "Example of American Greatness."

Arbor Hills Celebration - $28.50, A sparkling wine that is a fruity-light white wine, low in alcohol, blend of Traminette, Cayuga White and Vidal. Great served with fresh fruit. A must for wedding toasts -- special label is available. This sparkling white wine is fruity, light and low in alcohol. Arbor Hill Celebration is a blend of Traminette, Cayuga White and Vidal. Serve it ice cold in a fluted champagne glass for that special occasion.

Arbor Hills Onnalinda White Table Wine , This wine is part of Arbor Hill's Lake Boat Series brand. The Lake Boat Series wines are made to commemorate the steamboat era of Canandaigua Lake, the Finger Lake on which we're located. A detailed label featuring the steamboat called Onnalinda and the history behind this particular steamboat adorns one side of this bottle. This semi-dry blend of European style wine grapes is harvested from the vines that grace the hills overlooking Canandaigua Lake. Its taste is unique only to grapes grown in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The blend is of Cayuga White, Vidal and Traminette grapes, similar to a Chablis. This wine is neutral tasting which satisfies many different people's tastes...not too dry nor too sweet.

Casa Larga Vineyards Gewürztraminer 2002, A spicy, dry, Alsacian style "Gewürtz." Fantastic with lightly seasoned or spicy foods.   Wonderful peach and melon note, round and juicy.
