Updated 04/06/2007 Posted 3/7/05 - A new international agreement on wine-making practices gives these nation's wines automatic clearance for export to key markets. The Agreement on Mutual Acceptance of Oenological Practices has been ratified by Australia, Canada, the US, Chile and Argentina. New Zealand is expected to ratify soon as well. Editor's comment: Though the number of acres of Gewürztraminer grown weren't published with the Crush report, it would appear that it had similarly increased as did the total tons crushed. Reports from leading wine tasters noted a decline in crop; it their information is correct, is the larger 2004 Gewürztraminer crush due to existing growth with higher yields ? For additional information, view the California Gewürztraminer wine index page. Posted 1/27/05 - "Consumers often benefit from mergers because of economies of scale, which keep prices low for the wines in the $5 to $15 price categories. The downside is that variety usually declines since few wine companies desire to market wines from grapes other than those that are easiest to sell. As a result, we will likely see more chardonnay and merlot, and a lot less Sangiovese, Grenache, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and other specialty wines." editorial team Posted 1/17/05 - Wine Institute Statement on 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Wednesday January 12, 6:17 pm ET, From Robert P. Koch, Wine Institute President and CEO - SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- "We commend the U.S. Departments of Agriculture (USDA) and Health and Human Services (HHS) on their balanced approach to the recommendations on wine, beer, and distilled spirits consumption by adults in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans released today. We support the key recommendation which maintains the emphasis on moderate consumption: 'Those who choose to drink alcoholic beverages should do so sensibly and in moderation,' defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men. For purposes of explaining moderation, the guidelines count as a drink five ounces of wine, 12 ounces of regular beer or 1 1/2 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits." "Since ancient times, wine has been appreciated as an enhancement to meals and a beverage of enjoyment by cultures throughout the world. The straightforward advice in the Dietary Guidelines, encouraging physical activity, weight control, balanced nutrition and moderate consumption of certain foods and beverages, serves as an important education tool which should be actively shared with the American public." "We concur with the balanced opening statement of the guideline, 'The consumption of alcohol can have beneficial or harmful effects depending on the amount consumed, age and other characteristics of the person consuming the alcohol, and specifics of the situation' and with the guidelines' caution against excessive consumption and its assertion that there are some individuals who should not drink. To this end, Wine Institute incorporates the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans into our social responsibility program." The guidelines, which are revised and released jointly every five years by the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services, serve as the basis for the nutrition policy in the United States. Posted 12/27/04 - The latest issue of Wine Spectator arrived today with their Top 100 Wines of the Year (by Classic-Scoring of 2004), plus the Wine of the Year (the Most Exciting of 2004). Unfortunately, Gewürztraminers weren't well represented at all; the Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Alsace Grand Cru Gueberschwihr Goldert Vendange Tardive 2002 at 96 pts, a $120/bottle with a mere 175 cases produced, and the Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Alsace Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Clos St.-Urbain 2002 at 95 pts, a $98/bottle and 1,050 cases produced vintage were the only ones to make the list, and that was in the Classic-Scoring. The issue also listed the "10 Years of Top 10's", and the only times a Gewürztraminer made this list was in 1994, #6 at 96 pts, the Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Alsace Grand Cru Goldert Vendange Tardive 1990 ($45/bottle). Domaine Zind- Humbrecht can be proud of their achievements, but Gewürztraminer as a whole has taken a very deep back-seat to the rest of the wine world. Posted 12/26/04 - Christmas provided one bottle of 2001 Trimbach Gewurztraminer, and as a gag gift with a requested DVD, one bottle of Boone's Farm Strawberry (Maybe it will keep as long as the late '60's Ripple I gave my doctor last year.) Posted 12/21/04 - Canadian Gewürztraminer Wine Cellar Index Posted 12/15/04 - Just this week (week of Dec 12, 2004) I found the Fine Living channel on cable, and discovered three very entertaining and informative shows; NapaStyle, Simply Wine, and the Thirsty Traveler. I enjoy listening to each show's host/hostess. See two of the links to future show listings to your right.
